St. Patricks Day Run – South Sligo A.C. The stage is set for the annual St Patricks Day Road Race in Tubbercurry on this Sunday March 17th.     Hosted by South Sligo Athletic Club, participants have the option of 10K Road Race, or 5k Run and walk.  This is a very popular event for runners, joggers, walkers and families.   As in other years, the organisers are expecting a huge turn out for the event again this year. Operation Transformation:  Paul Murphy who was a local participant on the national Operation Transformation programme on TV recently, did himself and his family proud over the last 6 weeks.  Paul lost an amazing 3 stone during the period of the programme and he brought national prominence to Tubbercurry in the process.  Paul has changed his lifestyle and can now be seen on a regular basis jogging on the Ballina Road and Forest Walk circuit at Rathscanlon and Rhue.  Rumour has it that he is now being considered for Tubbercurry GAA teams, starting with the Junior team and hopefully moving up to the Seniors in time for the Club Championship.  Pauls achievements will hopefully be an inspiration to many others who are challenged with overweight.

New footpath  A new footpath has been developed on Mountain Road, Tubbercurry, extending the one presently there.  It now services Baileys Nursing Home and up to the Meadow Brook estate.  Well done to Sligo Council and local residents including Patricia Feely for all your efforts.

Ploughing – Sligo County Ploughing Competition takes place on Monday 18th March bank holiday from 12 – 5pm on the lands of John Brennan, Chaffpool, Tubbercurry.  Classes in Horse, Tractor, Donkeys, Single furrow, Two furrow, Three furrow and vintage, a good days work in the making. This is a hugely interesting event in beautiful rural surroundings and all welcome. Bring your wellies.

Tubbercurry Ladies Golf Club  – Annual Table Quiz takes place on this Thursday 14th March @ 8pm in the golf Clubhouse,  All welcome –  a very  enjoyable evening assured, prizes galore.

Joe Dunne, Cloonacool – The sudden and unexpected death occurred of Joe Dunne, late of Cloonacool and originally from Carrowreagh Knox, Tubbercurry.  In his mid 60’s Joe was still very active as a self-employed construction worker, and over the years he had worked on many construction sites and houses throughout Co. Sligo.  Joe was also community involved and had helped the Cloonacool Drama Society construct their set for this years Festival circuit and was a supporter of Cloonacool Tidy Towns organisation.  The Cloonacool Mens shed is due to be set up shortly and Joe was also an advocate of that organisation.  His remains reposed at the Morahan Funeral home and requiem mass was in St. Michaels Church, Cloonacool, followed by burial in Cloonacool Cemetary.  Joe is survived by his wife Mary, son Aidan, daughters  Edel & Catherine, in laws, grandchildren, brothers Gerry, John and Bernard, sisters Maureen & Carmel and many friends and neighbours, all to whom sympathy is extended.  May he rest in peace.

Mick O’Connell, Spiddal:  The recent death occurred of Mick O’Connell at his home in Spiddal, Co. Galway.  Mick was a resident of Tubbercurry for nearly 20 years in the 1970’s and 80’s when he worked with the Department of Agriculture throughout Co. Sligo as a farm advisor and inspector.  Mick was always a light hearted man who was a native Irish speaker and was fully immersed in Tubbercurry life when resident here.  Marie his wife was very much involved in Phoenix Players.  Mick was an expert fisherman who loved to fish in out of the way places and was also an excellent card placer of poker and 25.  Sympathies are extended to his wife Marie, and children Cait, Tadhg and Padraic as well as his extended family.  May he rest in Peace.

North Connaught College  – Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board are holding a Monster 25 Card Drive (Singles) takes place this Tuesday 12thMarch, 2019 at 8.30pm sharp in the May Queen, Tubbercurry – Raffle on the night – 1st Prize €300, 2nd Prize €200, 3rd Prize €100 – Tickets are €10 each and are available from North Connaught College or The May Queen, Tubbercurry all welcome.

Phoenix Players Rehearsals are now in full swing for the Phoenix Players’ forthcoming production of ‘The Sound of Music’ to be staged on 29th, 30th and 31st March and 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th April.  Production Director Tom Walsh has assembled a cast of eighty ranging in ages from eight to eighty from all over South Sligo!  Tickets will go on sale at the end of the month so watch this space.  This will be a light hearted family show that will bring huge enjoyment to cast and audience.  Tickets for the Phoenix Players’ production of The Sound of Music are now available from Nora Brennan (Nathy’s) , Teeling St. ,Tel no: 0719185116.  All tickets cost €20 but admission for children under 12 is € 10 and is refundable at the door on the night of the performance.  There are still a few ‘walk on’ parts available. Smart Community Tubbercurry You are invited to an information evening on the rollout of the Smart Community programme in Tubbercurry & South Sligo on Wednesday, 13th March at 8 p.m. in An Chroi South Sligo Enterprise Centre, Ballina Road, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo. Your attendance and input into the programme would be very much appreciated. During the evening we will also break into groups to discuss how local businesses and community groups can get involved to allow us to maximise the success of the Smart Community initiative in Tubbercurry and South Sligo. All welcome.  At the end of 2018 the Department of Communications, Climate action and Environment announced that Tubbercurry has been chosen as Ireland’s first Smart Community. Over the next 12 months a number of events and initiatives will be organised in the town to support the evolution of our town into a Smart Community. A Smart Community will enable local citizens to discover and experience what is possible with digital technology and content. The Smart Community programme will focus on three key pillars – physical & mental wellbeing; economic wellbeing and basic digital skills. RSVP by email by Tuesday 12th March. We look forward to welcoming you to An Chroi.

St Patrick’s Day Parade will commence at 4.30 from Kilmactigue community centre. Our grand Marshall this year is Shauna Henry, caption of Tourlestrane senior ladies all Ireland finalists. Please come out and support your  local parade.

Spring into Action: New Walking Group in Tubbercurry. Tubbercurry Walkers will start a new walking group with the support of Sligo Sports & Recreation Partnership  meeting one evening and morning during the week.  Monday eve at 8pm from the clock in the Square and Thursday mornings@ 9.45 am from the Family Resource Centre car park. Free event.   All abilities welcome. Local walks. Come along and meet your neighbours.

House Concert  Dana Cooper, a singer songwriter from Nashville will play a house concert at Moy River Folk Club (Moy River B&B) in Cloonacool on Sat 16th March at 8pm. Support by Gillian Tuite (Ireland). Booking on 087 2512030.

Active Retirement – The local Active Retirement Association members have a busy schedule for March, including our usual weekly activities of Bowling, Curling, and Yoga, Whist Game, Visit to the Western Drama Festival and an outing to Castlebar Sports Arena for a Bowling session.  We are also now working on the compilation of another book in our ‘The Way That It Was’ series, this one based on memories of life, history, customs, stories etc in our grandparent’s time.   Plans for our Annual June Community Holiday have now been finalised and our Trip to Northern Ireland, touring the various northern coastal areas and sights is organised for 5 nights/6 days, starting on Sunday, June 2nd. Based in the 4 star City Hotel, Derry, the cost, including hotel tips, some entry fees and all trips and travel by luxury coach, is €500, with Single Room supplement of €20 per night (very limited).  A deposit of €100, non-refundable, is required and bookings should be made by March 31st to 087 7720950 or 087 9042315.  All interested are very welcome to join us.  

Sligo Sport & Recreation Partnership : are running an 8 week  “Walk to Run Programme”  in Tubbercurry – A fun and supportive way to your first 5k.   Starting on Thursday 7th March from  7.30pm – 8.30pm  at Tubbercurry Family Resource Centre.  Registration takes place at 7pm before walk starts.  Fee is €20.  For more information phone 071 9161511.   Sligo Sport & Recreation Partnership: are running a 6 week Indoor Rowing Fitness Programme for men over 35 years on Tuesday nights from 7-8pm and 8-9pm.  Registration takes place with a “Come and Try Evening” on Tuesday 12th March at 8pm in St. Brigid’s Hall.  Cost €20.  Classes limited to 15 people and places will be given on a first come first served basis on registration evening.  For more information contact Bernie Reidy on 087-9726341.
