Sligo Greenway

The A.G.M. of the Sligo Greenway Co-Op took place last week with a large crowd in attendance. The enthusiasm for a Greenway to be developed on the footprint of the old Sligo-Limerick rail line is very strong and growing in strength as each obstacle to the development is overcome one by one. As well as being a marvellous walking and cycling facility for the local population from Sligo to Mayo, it will also be a great attraction for tourists into the Co. Sligo region. This in turn will have a spin off for all the tourist related businesses, including Hotels, B&B premises, pubs, restaurants, and other related service industries. At a time when employment opportunities in Co Sligo are limited, it is essential that this Greenway Project continues to its final goal of receiving funding to get the route opened. Many people may ask, how can they help? At present membership of the Co-Op stands at 800, but this number needs to be doubled or even trebled.

If you or your friends and family have not already joined, please do so to lend your support to the project. Membership of the Co-Op costs just €10, and this can be done on line. Please mail sligogreenwaycoop@gmail.com for membership details, or if you are not yet computer good, please leave your contact details with any of the committee, including Noel Johnson at his Computerbits shop in Tubbercurry.

Lough Talt Water – Boil Notice

Representatives from Irish Water held a meeting recently with all the public representatives from Sligo Co. Council and also with a number of Community Representatives. They gave an in-depth description of the ongoing problems associated with the water supply from Lough Talt. In a nutshell the boil water notice is set to continue into the immediate future with no sign yet of it being lifted. Many representatives were totally unaware of how basic the treatment plant at Lough Talt actually is, and indeed it is probably incorrect to use the name ‘treatment plant’ at all. The water coming from the lake goes through a basic system where the water is chlorinated, but it is not put through any filtering system as is the norm in other more modern facilities.

Evidence of Cryptosporidium continues in the water as this is the danger season for this contamination and the public should check the Irish Water website on a regular basis for further updates.  However, households should definitely continue to boil water and leave to cool before drinking.
