Blood Donation Clinic in St. Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry on Thursday, 7th February 2019 from 4.30pm to 8.00pm. As always, the demand for blood continues and every possible donation is desperately needed. Injured and sick people live because other people give. Blood is life and giving some is one of the greatest gestures of love and care that most people will ever have chance to avail of.

Monthly Comhaltas Session – The monthly Comhaltas session will be held in Nathy Brennan’s on Friday 1st February. Junior session stars at 8.00pm and senior session begins at 9.00pm.  Please note the change of time, the starting times have been brought forward an hour. All musicians are very welcome.

Mary Burke, Achonry – The recent death occurred in her 95th year of Mary Burke, late of Tubberdur, Achonry. A native of Ballylongford, Co. Kerry, Mary come to the Achonry area as a young adult to help care for an elderly relation, and after some time met her future husband, Kevin. She was then to remain in Achonry for the rest of her life while rearing her family. Mary was always a very chatty, outgoing lady who was always young at heart, and her favourite social outing was playing cards, especially 25. Mary was pre-deceased by her husband Kevin, and sons Paddy and Johnny.  Her remains reposed at the residence of her daughter Mary at Rinbane and removal took place to the Church of St. Nathy and St. Brigid, Achonry. Burial took place in Achonry Cemetery.  She is survived by her daughter Mary, sons, Walter, Martin and Joseph, daughter in law, grandchildren, great grandchild, extended family, neighbours and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May she rest in peace.

Tubbercurry Active Retirement Group –  This is a special year for the local Active Retirement members as they will be celebrating the 25th year of their very successful organisation. Many events will be organised throughout the year. The AGM takes place on Tuesday January 29th in the Health Centre, and new members will be very welcome. The usual activities of Bowling, Curling (Mondays), Yoga class and Irish Social Hour, (Thursdays), Book Club (Wednesday) will commence on the week beginning January 29th. Book for discussion this month in Conclave by Robert Harris. Make it your 2019 resolution to join this nationwide association this year and you will soon enjoy all the benefits it brings to this community.

Viarmes Town Twinning – 20th Anniversary Celebrations –  This year we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the twinning between Viarmes and Tubbercurry. A group from South Sligo will be travelling to Viarmes on May 9th to May 13th. There will be various activities including a day trip to Paris organised by our French hosts. The cost of flights is reasonable at the moment with Ryanair. Flight details for the trip: Ryanair flight departs Dublin for Beauvais on Thursday 9th May at 6.30am, returning Monday 13th May, departing Beauvais for Dublin at 9.25am.

Holy Family National School – Holy Family NS had a very exciting day on Friday 18th January when they welcomed local Operation Transformation member, Paul Murphy to Holy Family NS. Paul joined 1st and 2nd class doing their 10@10 in the school hall. They were also joined by Minister Sean Canney and Councillor Paul Taylor. Well done to Ms Conlon and Ms Tuohy for leading the activities. Minister Canney also visited 5th and 6th classes. In 6th he listened to the children explain their Junior Entrepreneur Project and also showed off their skills on the class Ipads. 5th class were working on Izak9 and the Minister was very impressed with their Maths Activities.  We welcome back the Skipping Workshop on Tuesday 29th January. This is part of our Active Flag Project.

Music Generation starts on Monday 28th January for 5th class and 6th class. The children are learning guitar this term. Families wishing to enrol pupils in Junior Infants for September 2019 should contact the school to ask for an application form – principalholyfamilyns@gmail.com or 0719186291

Fundraising Success – A recent fundraiser organised by Gemma Coleman of Dowras, Tourlestrane, raised in excess of €3,000 for Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association. The funds were raised through a number of activities including collection points at Mid-West Radio, Gillespies of Tubbercurry and a House Concert at Moy River Folk Club in Cloonacool.

Cloonacool Players – Rehearsals are in full swing at present for the Cloonacool Players up-coming production of ‘I do not like thee Dr. Fell’ a dark comedy written by playwright Bernard Farrell. This play will be performed in Cloonacool Community Centre on Friday 15th, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of February next at 8pm each night. It will then travel to St. Nathys Hall Mullinabreena on Friday night 22nd February and then on to the Arts Centre in Ballina on Thursday night 28th February for a special needs charity event. It will also play in St. Brigid’s Hall Tubbercurry on Monday 4th March at the Western Drama Festival. The play which has a story line based on group therapy support and is built around the complex characters who attend the session, is guaranteed to keep audiences fully engaged throughout the evening. It will also play on the drama festival circuit of Ireland, during the month of March. So put these dates in your diary.
