Blood Donation Clinic The next Blood Donation Clinic will take place on Tuesday 1st October from 4.30pm to 8pm in St. Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry.  As always, the demand for blood continues and every possible donation is desperately needed. Injured and sick people live because other people give.  Blood is life and giving some is one of the greatest gesture of love and care that most people will ever have chance to avail of.  You get more than you give……  LoCall 1850 731 137

Phoenix Players A meeting of the Phoenix Players was held recently to plan a programme for the coming season. As next year will be the 75th anniversary of the group it is hoped to have an action packed year featuring not only drama but also music, song and dance utilising the wide range of local talent seen in last year’s production of The Sound of Music.  A book chronicling the last 25 years of the group is being complied so anyone who has photos, posters or other memorabilia from productions during those years are asked to leave them in to Mary or Martin Leonard at The Fuji shop on the Square. Please make sure to attach name and phone number to make sure items are safely returned. At the conclusion of the meeting votes of sympathy were extended to Jimmy Coleman on the death of his father Jim Coleman and to the Brennan and Mc Cormack families on the death of Joanie

Rhue Cemetery The Rhue Cemetery Committee would like to say a sincere Thank You to all the people who gave so generously at the recent gate collection.  The amount collected was €1,695.  This money goes towards the upkeep of the cemetery.

Comhaltas news The monthly Comhaltas session  will be held in Nathy Brennan’s on Friday 4th October   Junior session stars at 8.30pm and senior session begins at 9.30pm. . All musicians are very welcome at our comhaltas session  and bring along your friends.

Traditional Music Classes Traditional music classes continue in Tubbercurry Family Resource centre on each Monday. Flute and Whistle for beginners.  Starts at 6.15pm, advanced Flute, Whistle and Fiddle at 7.00pm and Fiddle for beginners at 7.45pm.   All budding musicians very welcome.

Local Yoga Classes“Hatha Yoga classes starting on the 10th of October in Drummartin Ox Mountain Heritage Centre (beside Joe Dans Pub). Thursday evenings from 7:45pm – 9:00pm.  Classes are suitable for beginners. €10 drop in, or 6 classes for €50.   Contact Katie on 0871851167”

Celebrating 50 Years Choir celebrates its 50th Anniversary on Sunday 13th October with mass at 10am in St. Michael’s Church, Cloonacool.  Mass will be celebrated by Father Dan O’Mahony, whose support and encouragement has been invaluable these past ten years.  After the mass, you are invited to the Community Centre to join in the celebrations, including all those who have been part of the Choir whether voice, playing or giving advice over the years.  Pass the word, and come along on the 13th.

Active Retirement : Tubbercurry Active Retirement Association is back in action after the Summer break with meetings in the local Health Centre weekly on every Tuesday afternoon at 3 pm which cover a variety of talks, card games, quizzes, crafts etc.  Outings are arranged each month and our 3-day visit to Kilkenny will be taking place on October 7th to 9th – this is now fully booked, with a waiting list for cancellations. Short Mat Bowling will be played on the Mondays of October and December from 3 pm to 5 pm, with Curling on the Mondays of September and November.  Our Keep Fit classes are arranged for 3 pm on all Thursdays, starting on October 10th, and our Book Club meets on the final Wednesday of each month at 3.30. All these activities take place in Teach Laighne and new members are very welcome to join in. Our read for October is ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris – this book is now available in the local Library Highlight of our Programme will be the celebration in November of our 25th anniversary and the launch of our 4th book in ‘The Way That It Was’ series that will deal with life in Tubbercurry and in South Sligo in our grand and great grandparent’s times.    

South Sligo in Other Times This is the name of a new book on little stories, events, people and places of South Sligo, covering Tubbercurry, Tourlestrane, Mullinabreena and Achonry.  Written by renowned author, James McGuinn from Cashel, just outside Tubbercurry, it is full of interesting stories, photos and memoirs, and is a must for any family library. Selling at just €10, all the proceeds are going to the Tubbercurry branch of the Sligo Cancer Support Centre.  They will also make ideal Christmas presents for South Sligo natives living away from home.  Buy early and often!  Available in various outlets in Tubbercurry or from the Cancer Support centre in Ard Aisling.

Tubbercurry Card Game Single Hand 25 card game takes place in St. Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry every Sunday night at 8.30pm.  All are welcome.
