Tubbercurry Connaught Rangers Memorial Group
President Michael D. Higgins to unveil Connaught Rangers Memorial in Tubbercurry on 27th June 2020. Major Decade of Centenaries event announced.
The Tubbercurry Connaught Rangers Commemoration Committee in conjunction with Sligo County Council have announced a major commemoration event for Saturday 27th June in Tubbercurry. The event will feature a commemoration ceremony and the unveiling of a memorial. President Michael D. Higgins has confirmed his attendance as guest of honour and will perform the official dedication of the memorial.
The project is designed to tell the story and honour the memory of the courageous men who while far from home stood in solidarity with their native country men fighting for our Independence. For the last four years we have worked hard to bring this project to this point and we can all now look forward to a great day with a formal State Acknowledgment of the actions of these brave men. Over the last four years the committee have made contact with relatives of the men that were involved in the mutiny of India. While they now live in all parts of the world many are making plans to come to Tubbercurry for the commemoration. This will be the first occasion where all the families and descendants will have an opportunity to come together and honour the memory of their ancestors and for the surviving sons and daughters of the Rangers who were involved in the mutiny, it will be a day of great personal significance as the state formally acknowledges the contribution the Rangers made on our journey to Independence”.
This memorial was officially launched in Tubbercurry Community Library on Saturday 9th November 2019 with a very successful informative seminar on the history of the men of the Connaught Rangers and their actions in India in 1920.
