Roadworks which were due to take start week on Mountain road for upgrade of water mains have been deferred until further notice. We will advise of new commencement date when to hand.
The General Election of last week threw up many interesting results both nationally and locally, and it will be interesting to see what, if any Government takes shape over the next few weeks.
At a local level in South Sligo, the big news was that sitting T.D. Eamon Scanlon lost his seat, much to the disappointment of his many supporters throughout South Sligo. New T.D. for this area is the Fine Gael representative, Frank Feighan who has strong connections to Tubbercurry. Frank’s father, Patsy Feighan was born and reared in Tubbercurry and Frank’s Aunt, Myra Regan (nee Feighan) lived in Teeling Street, Tubbercurry most of her life.
Another new T.D. is Marian Harkin who is also no stranger to Tubbercurry. She was a boarder in the Marist Convent for 5 years when attending Secondary School here in the late 1960’s. Sitting T.D. Marc McSharry was returned for Fianna Fail and he has many relations around Tubbercurry including his Aunt, Carmel Kilcoyne (nee McSharry). Our fourth T.D. returned was poll topper Martin Kenny, Sinn Fein. While not having any direct family connections to South Sligo, he has often attended public meetings in the area. Martin Kenny obviously has strong support throughout South Sligo as he polled well, getting hundreds of first preference votes, and getting votes in every polling station.
Best wishes are extended to all newly elected T.D.’s as they work on trying to put a new Government in place.
Blood Donation Clinic, Tubbercurry
The next local Blood Donation Clinic will be Wednesday 19th February 2020 from 4.30pm to 8pm in St. Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry. As always, the demand for blood continues and every possible donation is desperately needed. Injured and sick people live because other people give. Blood is life and giving some is one of the greatest gesture of love and care that most people will ever have chance to avail of. Just to remind people that the ban on blood donations from people who lived in the UK has now been lifted. For more information visit www.giveblood.ie
